ABOUT US

The purpose of the Center is twofold. The first is to take care of and make accessible the archives and collections of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Secondly and equally important is to promote and pursue research in the history of science in Sweden, with an emphasis on the history of Swedish history of science. To achieve these goals we have a staff that runs the archives and take care of the collections, and we also have externally funded researchers associated with the Center.

History

The Center for the History of Science was established in 1988 as a research institute under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (RSAS). Its purpose is to pursue research into the history of science and to initiate and promote such research in Sweden and abroad. The most expedient possession is the material in the RSAS's historical archives, which reflects significant aspects of research within Sweden from the eighteenth century through to the present day. The majority of the material in the archives consists of the Academy's own administrative documents, such as minutes, correspondence and writings from 1739, when the academy was established, to modern times. But the archive also includes many travel journals and documents from Swedish research expeditions. In addition, there are several personal archives, notably those of fellows of the Academy.
